FORUM No. 28 out now: "Living. Learning."
05/07/2004 - "Living. Learning." is the title of the latest edition of the SOS-Kinderdorf-FORUM, the magazine published by the Hermann Gmeiner Academy. The current issue deals with preconditions that create an atmosphere beneficial for learning, the obstacles that impede constructive learning and how we can deal with them.
The leading article deals with the approaches of the Great Educational Reform, a movement of the end of the 19th century that introduced the basic principle of " learning in a playful way and learning by playing" with its more child-oriented methods as a substitute for the narrow-minded educational concept of learning.
Another text describes how differently a number of cultures define "learning" and what kind of effects this has on their respective educational systems. In the interview readers learn about the Indian tradition of passing on knowledge from one generation to the next and how important this is in present-day Indian society.
Schooling is generally the first right the children of poor families in Latin America have to abandon in order to contribute to the family's income. The article "Breaking the Vicious Circle" describes the programmes with which the SOS Social Centres in Latin America try to work against this deplorable state of affairs.
The article "About War, School and Life" does not talk about physics, geography or history lessons but about personality development, the ability to discuss, ecological awareness, freedom of self-determination as teaching subjects for a practical lifestyle in the SOS Hermann Gmeiner School in Sheikh, Somaliland.
Read about this and much more in FORUM No. 28 - in German, English, French, Spanish or Russian.
