International organisations challenge leaders to strengthen child rights
In joint statement, on 25th Anniversary of the Convention of the Rights of the Child, major child-focused NGOs tell how progress has been made in child welfare, but not equally for all children.
20 November 2014 – Today, on the 25th anniversary of the Convention of the Rights of Child (UNCRC), major international child rights organisations issued a joint letter to world leaders and citizens on the current state of global child rights. While huge advances have been made in early childhood survival, education and sanitation, among other areas, some children are still denied those gains.
In the statement, SOS Children's Villages and the other NGO partners call on citizens and leaders, and also commit themselves to working ‘country by country, city by city, village by village, to do even more for children through sustained political commitment, strategic investments, and actions that match our words’.
'The commitment to realize the rights of all children was grounded in the conviction that it was both the right thing to do and the strategic thing to do. For by advancing the rights of children today, we help them become adults who will be able to assume responsibility for future generations – in turn, helping build a more prosperous, peaceful, and just world.'
