David Asfaw from SOS Children's Villages' office in the capital Conakry says that the situation is deteriorating by the day. Trade union strikes against President Conte have now spread to all areas of the country and it could be that the next few days will see a large demonstration at the presidential palace. David Asfaw tells of shots being heard and daily assaults on the protesters.
All the schools in the capital have closed down upon orders from the Ministry of Education; many streets have been closed off. Those who work at the office of SOS Children's Villages in Conakry have not been able to go to work for days as a result of the precarious situation.
There is regular contact via telephone with the SOS facilities in the three locations Conakry, Kankan and N'Zérékoré. Children, SOS mothers and staff members are in good health, but have been advised, if possible, not to leave the safety of the premises of the SOS Children's Villages.
