Hugo Sanchez to attend 6 villages for 2006 opening in Morelia
13/03/2007 - Mexico's national team coach and FIFA/SOS ambassador Hugo Sanchez will attend the inauguration of an SOS Children's Village in Morelia on 20 March, one of six such projects worldwide built with donations received from the highly successful 6 villages for 2006 charity campaign.
Other guests who will attend the event include Guatemalan FIFA delegate Rafael Tinoco, the Governor of the province of Michoacán Lázaro Cárdenas, and Helmut Kutin, President of SOS Children's Villages.
6 villages for 2006, a two-year joint fundraising effort between FIFA and SOS Children's Villages for the 2006 FIFA World CupTM, exceeded all expectations by collecting over USD 21 million in donations to give 800 orphaned and abandoned children a new home in six children's villages - one each in Brazil, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, Ukraine and Vietnam. In addition, a further 5,000 children and 1,000 families will benefit from social services provided at ancillary projects.
The children's village in Mexico was built in Morelia, the capital of the Michoacán province, where the number of children at risk of abandonment and in danger of facing a life in poverty is increasing steadily. More than 100 children will find a new family in 14 houses at this children's village, while hundreds of youths from the community will benefit from services offered at an ancillary social centre.
Hugo Sanchez is one of many football greats serving as a "FIFA for SOS Children's Villages" ambassador - a list including Fabio Cannavaro, Wayne Rooney, Andriy Shevchenko, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Didier Drogba and many others! Over the past two years, Sanchez visited various projects of SOS Children's Villages and helped promote 6 villages for 2006 at the 2006 FIFA World CupTM.
