Lothar Matthäus gives his support to a new SOS Children's Village in Serbia
25/03/2003 - Lothar Matthäus, record-holding German national player and coach of Partisan Belgrade, will support the construction of an SOS Children's Village in Serbia with a donation of around 100,000 Euro. The cheque will be handed over on 25 March in Munich.
The construction of an SOS Children's Village in Kraljevo, Serbia and Montenegro, will begin in June this year. Lothar Matthäus showed himself to be full of enthusiasm for the idea of making a donation of 102,000 Euros for the construction of a new SOS Children's Village in the country of his present club, Partisan Belgrade. With this donation, Matthäus is making good his commitment to support SOS Children's Villages with the proceeds from his farewell game at FC Bayern Munich.
SOS Children's Village Kraljevo in central Serbia, where there is insufficient social infrastructure to look after abandoned children, will provide a long-term home for 84 children in 12 family houses. Construction work begins in June 2003 and should be completed by the beginning of 2005. For over 25 years there has already been an SOS Children's Village in Novi Sad which has capacity for 156 children and includes a youth facility.
