In their role as official FIFA/SOS Ambassadors, the two players joined forces ahead of the crucial Premiership clash at Stamford Bridge on 9 May to show their solidarity for orphaned children around the world.
Hot off the pitch after their last clash at Old Trafford, Rooney and Shevchenko exchanged signed shirts and posed for photos for the international NGO SOS Children's Villages. The shirts will be auctioned online, on the website of
SOS Children's Villages UK, to raise money for the work of SOS Children’s Villages supporting orphaned and abandoned children around the world.
Wayne joined forces with SOS Children's Villages in October 2005 when he became the official FIFA/SOS Ambassador for England and pledged his support for 6 villages for 2006, the charity’s joint World Cup campaign with FIFA. Shevchenko, FIFA/SOS Ambassador for Ukraine since early 2005, is patron for the country’s first SOS Children’s Village currently being built near Kiev as part of the 6 villages for 2006 campaign.
Bidding for the two shirts is currently underway on the website of SOS Children’s Villages UK, with the auction closing on Sunday 13th May at 8pm.
